Iconic 80s toy celebrates 30th birthday today

Sylvanian Families – the collectible toy with woodland animals and dolls houses – is 30 years old today.

First created in Japan, yet based on 1950s rural Britain, Sylvania is a world made up of families of tiny woodland creatures that dress and act just like humans. ‘Sylvan’ means ‘of the forest’ in Latin.

All the Sylvanian characters are grouped into families and each one has its own personal biography.

The first families to appear in 1985 were the Evergreens, Wildwoods, Babblebrooks, Thistlethorns and the McBurrows. These bears, rabbits, mice and moles lived in the Country Cottage and Deluxe Country House.
